What happens when a global pandemic meets a milestone anniversary for a magazine deeply rooted in celebrating Black womanhood? The result is a groundbreaking cover featuring the iconic Naomi Campbell, shot entirely by herself, for Essence's 50th anniversary issue.
In May 2020, Essence Magazine commemorated its golden jubilee, a testament to its enduring legacy of uplifting and empowering Black women for half a century. This momentous occasion was marked by a cover featuring none other than supermodel extraordinaire, Naomi Campbell. However, this was no ordinary cover shoot. In a publishing first for the magazine, the entire issue, including Campbell's cover, was created 100 percent digitally. This unprecedented move was born out of necessity, a response to the restrictions and challenges imposed by the coronavirus pandemic. Instead of the usual elaborate photo shoot, Campbell took creative control, photographing and styling herself from the confines of her home. The 50th-anniversary edition, released on May 12th, marked Campbells seventh appearance on the cover of Essence.
